Mali Ston Bay is 28 kilometers long and it extends between the shores of the mainland and Pelješac peninsula. It is extremely elongated and branched into numerous coves. The total area of the bay is 76 km2. Due to its indentation with large coves and around 20 islets and ridges, the total length of the coastline is 102 kilometers. The bay is sheltered from larger waves and its shallow waters favor the installation of different farming structures, which enabled farming and collection of shellfish throughout the history.
